What do politics have to do with it? As far as I know high explosives kill and maim regardless of political affiliation, and we have had tragedies with fieworks under all manners of governments. What is required now is an aware public that will act upon suspicion and not be victimized by our infamous "delizzju thugs".

Your hobby is not everyone's and I hope that one day soon these people will release that they do not have the unconditional support of everyone on these islands, though they act as though they do.

what is it with some people? After such a tragedy one would expect them to be extra cautious for their own sake..........but it seems in malta eveything can be done in the name of the "hobby".....on the other hand well done goes to the police who should now keep up their efforts no matter what.......and please can we keep politics out of this....if you're still frustrated after another defeat there are other places to vent your anger, not under such a tragic and indeed serious news item!!! keep politics out!! And let courage and guts (something rare in both the PN and MLP ) in please!

Hi Victor - Here is an extract from 'The Times' of 13th March to answer your question .
'The Malta Environment and Planning Authority's decision-making process has been temporarily shut down by the Prime Minister as he prepares to take on the reform he promised before the election. The government said all of Mepa's public board meetings and those of the Development Control Commissions were "suspended until further notice" and that no planning decisions would be taken for the time being'

Mr Scerri what, exactly did the PM do with MEPA?

Apart from fine words, that is?

Fantastic. So not only can we not feel safe and sound at home. We now have to worry about whether we'll make it across the channel between Malta and Gozo.
Stephen Forster (on 22/3/08)
There are enough safety regulations "in force" on the island alone at the present time to stop this event happening, however with:-
1. The meagre resources available to the OHSA
2.The lack of an effective enforcement arm available
3. A police force waiting for tip-offs to act on said tip-offs

What do you expect? You cannot have your cake (explosive or not) and eat it!

Well done guys!!! Another Mission Accomplished.

Well done to all Tip-offs and to the Police . Keep it up.
Lest my eyes deceive me we are assisting at too many of these incidents of this sort since the Naxxar explosion. Pity a young mum's life is lost. Maybe her loss will at last be the start of a more strict regime to control import and distribution of explosive material .
Here I seriously propose to the government .... Much more enforcement and control is needed in this issue. From what we are seeing there seem to be flaws in the system which need to be addressed fast before another life is lost. This issue is a major threat for us citizens.
How about doing what the PM did with MEPA?
1. With immediate effect suspend all such imports and re-examine import licences for explosive materials.
2. Close down all manufacturing sites which do not comply with safety standards.
3. Specify a limit as to what extent of explosive material can be stored or manufactured in a given area.
