A man who yesterday pleaded not guilty to usury was granted bail against a deposit of €2,000 (Lm858.36) and a personal guarantee of €10,000 (Lm4,291.84).

Francis Gabriele, 64, of Qrendi pleaded not guilty to usury and threatening the alleged victims.

The court ordered all Mr Gabriele's assets to be frozen allowing for €13,980 (Lm6,000) a year to be used by Mr Gabriele until the case is decided.

Police Inspector Ivan Cilia prosecuted.

Lawyers Marion Camilleri and Charmaine Cherrett appeared for Mr Gabriele.
