The huge Laferla Cross and the adjacent Chapel of the Annunciation on the plateau, known as Ta’ l-Għolja, will be foodlit during the nights of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, Siggiewi local council said.
The steep track leading to the hill will also be floodlit and thus the hillside will be transformed into an appropriate Way of the Cross, the council said.
The cross was erected by Dun Pawl Laferla from Siġġiewi in 1903 to mark the beginning of the 20th century. A set of stone statues representing the Passion of our Lord were also placed along the track.
The original cross was destroyed during a storm in 1937. It was replaced in August 1963 and renovated in 1984.
Siġġiewi Council started floodlighting the Cross on Maundy Thursday night in 1994. Thousands of people visit Ta’ l-Għolja every Maudy Thursday.
