Launched last September, the 308 range continues to grow, offering more and better choices to the different clientele of this market segment.

Its style, its semi-tall architecture enhancing interior capacity and brightness, its quality and its road holding are key benefits that have seen the production of nearly 150,000 308s up to early March.

Another strong point of the 308 is its wide range of modern and efficient power trains, offering high performance while remaining environment friendly.

At the heart of this 308 family, the 1.6-litre HDi 80 kW (110 bhp) engine featuring as standard the additive-enhanced diesel particle filter system (FAP) now offers the choice of two new six-speed manual gearboxes, one controlled manually, the other electronically (the BMP6).

Designed in their entirety by PSA Peugeot Citroën teams, transmissions, designated as MCM (in-house code name standing for Mechanical Compact Manual gearbox) and MCP (Mechanical Compact Piloted gearbox) are built on the same assembly line in a new plant at Valenciennes.

The 'MCM' is built to an ambitious specification in terms of usability, robustness and compactness.

Indeed the most efficient technical solutions were employed to offer the driver maximum smoothness and precision when changing gear.

The 'MCP' electronically controlled gearbox, which eliminates the need for a clutch pedal, is a genuine alternative to traditional gearboxes due to its limited additional cost with respect to a manual gearbox. This highly responsive gearbox will appeal to gear change enthusiasts who will be able to use the gear lever or paddles behind the steering wheel. Its intelligent design provides the perfect recipe for stress-free driving by allowing independent gear changes, though the driver can take control again at any time.

The electronically controlled gear changes of the BMP6 make this the second car in the 308 range, after the 1.6 litre HDi 66 kW (90 bhp), to generate CO2 emissions of only 120 g/km, with reduced fuel consumption of 4.5 litres/100 km in the combined cycle.

The 308 range, in both its three- and five-door versions, now includes petrol engines developed through collaboration between the PSA Peugeot Citroën Group and the BMW Group, six petrol engines: 1.4-litre VTi 70 kW (five-speed manual gearbox), 1.6-litre VTi 88 kW (five-speed manual), 1.6-litre VTi 88 kW (four-speed automatic), 1.6-litre THP 110 kW (five-speed manual), 1.6-litre THP 103 kW (four-speed automatic), and 1.6-litre THP 128 kW (six-speed manual).

Diesel engines all feature HDi technology (Common Rail direct injection): 1.6- litre HDi with or without FAP 66 kW (five-speed manual gearbox), 1.6-litre HDi FAP 80 kW (six-speed manual), 1.6-litre HDi FAP 80 kW (six-speed electronically controlled), 2.0-litre HDi FAP 100 kW (six-speed manual), and 2.0-litre HDi FAP 100 kW (six-speed automatic gearbox).
