Christ was a victim of religious ignorance: he was betrayed and crucified because he was not recognised as the son of God.

Today, those who are lacking in religious knowledge end up resisting and excluding God from their lives, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech told the congregation who gathered for Mass on Friday in Victoria on the occasion of Our Lady of Sorrows.

During this Mass, Mgr Grech explained that just as Our Lady suffered when she held the dead body of her son Jesus, so today her suffering increases as she embraces every human being who, like Christ, is a victim.

Just as Christ was a victim of social violence in his time, so is man today subject to violent acts.

An example of this violence is drug trafficking. Those who are interested only in financial gain do not think twice about killing both individuals and whole families. Unfortunately those who keep silent are also accomplices.

Those who are truly devoted to Our Lady of Sorrows cannot remain indifferent to these societal wounds: religious ignorance and drugs, he said.
