Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has renewed the government’s plan to set up a major offshore windfarm.Speaking in Brussels, where climate change and energy security were among topics discussed at a summit meeting of European leaders, Dr Gonzi said Malta agreed with the EU aim to increase the production of renewable energy and will soon give further details of its plan to develop a modern offshore wind farm.

He said the project could be a public-private joint venture. Malta is also continuing to consider plans to link up with the European power grid using an undersea cable.

A few weeks ago, during the electoral campaign, Dr Gonzi said a wind farm would be set up 20 miles offshore and would generate between 75 and 100 megawatts of clean energy.
