Co-Cathedral's The Crucifixion Group restored

One of the treasures of St John's Co-Cathedral, The Crucifixion Group, has just been restored by the St John's Co-Cathedral Foundation.

The Crucifixion Group was a gift of Commander Fra Felicaja and has been in the Co-Cathedral since 1653. It consists of three larger than life wooden figures – the Crucifix, the Virgin and St John the Evangelist. The statues had suffered from the ravages of time and signs of woodworm infestation and weakness in their supports had been extremely evident.

Paul A. Attard, President of the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation said that one of the major aims of the foundation is to generate revenue to be used for the maintenance and restoration of the Co-Cathedral’s works of art and artefacts. He added that funds were never enough and the initiative of the Alfred Mizzi Foundation in sponsoring the restoration of these figures was commendable.

The inauguration of the restoration of The Crucifixion Group will take place at the Co-Cathedral on Tuesday with concert will be given by the St James Consort who will be playing Franz Josef Haydn’s Seven Last Words.
