World Glaucoma Day was celebrated on March 6, as reported in The Times two days later.
The Maltese Lions Clubs have been deeply involved in glaucoma prevention for many years. Indeed, the diagnostic equipment now in use in the health centres in Malta and Gozo was donated by the Maltese Lions Clubs many years ago. Through this contribution, thousands of Maltese have been tested and we are proud that, consequently, many hundreds have had their eyesight saved.
Last year, the five Maltese Lions Clubs were approached to finance the purchase of more modern and up-to-date equipment, again to be used in the health centres. This request was accepted in principle early this year. We are now in the stage of raising the necessary funds, which are estimated to be in the region of €37,000.
Our aim is to raise part of this money locally and to acquire the rest as a grant from the Lions Clubs International Foundation.
It is expected that the final formalities will be concluded in the coming weeks so that the project may go ahead.
