The visible trade gap in January 2008 stood at €95.1 million (Lm40.83 million) up by €15.9 million (Lm6.83 million) when compared to the same month last year, preliminary figures released by the National Statistics Office show.
There was an increase in both imports and exports to the tune of €27.1 million (Lm11.63 million) and €11.2 million (Lm4.81 million) respectively.
The increase in imports was mainly due to mineral fuels and lubricants.
The bulk of Malta's trade flows and consequent trade deficit continued to be directed towards the European Union during the first month of 2008.
