The Labour Party has regained its fourth seat on the second district, its birthplace and stronghold.

Michael Falzon, MLP deputy leader and a new candidate, was the first to be elected among the Labour candidates, followed by Joe Mizzi, Stefan Buontempo and Helena Dalli, who were all re-elected.

Lawrence Gonzi was re-elected for the Nationalist Party. All five seats on this district have therefore been allocated.

Both Dr Falzon and Dr Gonzi have also been elected from other districts (the tenth and ninth respectively) and will therefore have to give up one of their seats.

The Nationalist Party is also at risk of losing its fourth seat on the tenth district and could lose a seat each on the first and seventh districts.

But it will then be credited with four extra seats to give it a parliamentary majority of one. Those seats will be allocated to the candidates who come closest to being elected. In this way Parliament will be made up of 69 Members instead of 65, as in the last legislature.

Parliament was also composed of 69 members in the 1987 and 1996 legislatures.
