J. F. Galdes asked in his letter War Victims (February 26) what was the reason for the removal of the memorial panels at Floriana which had listed the names of the Maltese who had served their country in WWI.

I can suggest one reason. Many Maltese who had given service to their country and are buried in foreign lands were not listed on the memorial nor are they shown in the list of Maltese servicemen killed in WWI which was published in the Malta Government Gazette of November 19, 1938.

For Mr Gales to propose that a memorial should be erected only for the Maltese who died at sea would discriminate against the WWI Maltese who had served on land at Gallipoli and in other war zones.

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the end of WWI and, therefore, it is sad that the many Maltese who gave their lives in the Great War are still not remembered.
