Bayern Munich produced a masterful display to hand Anderlecht their heaviest home defeat in European competition when they beat them 5-0 to all but seal a place in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals yesterday.

Hamit Altintop gave the Bundesliga leaders a ninth-minute lead and Anderlecht's night took a turn for the worse just before half-time as Marcin Wasilewski was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Luca Toni struck his seventh goal of the competition to put Bayern 2-0 ahead on the stroke of half-time.

After the interval, Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose and substitute Franck Ribery also found the net as Bayern registered ran riot to make Wednesday's second leg in Munich a mere formality.

Everton had no answer to two pedigree second-half goals as they went down 2-0 away to Fiorentina.

After a first half in which Everton were off the pace, Zdravko Kuzmanovic and then Riccardo Montolivo each produced a memorable finish to confirm the Italians' superiority.

It was harsh on Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard, who had come to his team's rescue with a succession of outstanding saves - but otherwise the Toffees got their just deserts.

Steven Davis opened his goalscoring account as Rangers took a major step towards the last eight with a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen at Ibrox.

Davis sealed the win early in the second half after Daniel Cousin put his failed move to Fulham firmly behind him with a goal on the stroke of half-time.

Tottenham lose

Jefferson Farfan pounced on an error from Tottenham debutant Gilberto to hand PSV Eindhoven a crucial first-leg lead.

The Peruvian took the ball off the Brazilian 25 yards from goal, drove into the box and then fired past Paul Robinson brilliantly on 33 minutes.

It rewarded a fine display from PSV, who could have won by more had Farfan not wasted three other great chances.

The defeat was only Tottenham's third in 59 European matches at White Hart Lane, and leaves them with an uphill struggle when they visit the Dutch leaders in a week's time.
