More than 141,000 EU citizens and residents voted to select the winning design for the second commemorative €2 coin. The winning design symbolises the euro as the latest step in the long history of trade, from prehistoric barter to economic and monetary union.
The coin will commemorate 10 years of Economic and Monetary Union and the creation of the euro. Voting took place between January 31 and February 22 and the voters could choose between five designs pre-selected by European mint directors. The coins will be issued by all eurozone member states.
It was estimated that about 90 million of them will be issued from January 2009 onwards.
