Van Bommel: Bayern Munich's Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel has received an extra two-match ban after he made an obscene gesture towards the referee in last weekend's 1-1 draw with Hamburg. Van Bommel was automatically banned for one match after being sent off in added time against Hamburg and duly sat out Saturday's 1-0 win over Schalke. TV footage showed Van Bommel making an obscene gesture that was not originally seen by the referee and his ban was extended to three matches in total.
Brazil: Brazil's Olympic soccer team, which could include World Player of the Year Kaka, will stay in the athletes' village and travel on scheduled flights, Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president Ricardo Teixeira said. "The players will receive identical treatment to the athletes in other sports," Teixeira said last night. "I tried the other method and it didn't work. In Atlanta in 1996, we took the best team, the squad stayed in the best hotels, we spent $5 million and we didn't win."
Lampard: Chelsea are likely to appeal against Frank Lampard's red card following Saturday's 4-0 Premier League win over West Ham at Upton Park. The England midfielder was given his marching orders for appearing to slap Luis Boa Morte. "The assistant referee said that Frank slapped the face of Boa Morte," Grant said. "If it is true, I think the rule is that it is a red card. I will wait to see it but if the assistant referee is right, it is a red card."
