The 8th Community Technology Learning Centre (CTLC), which will provide free training courses in information and communication technology, was opened at the Employment Training Centre in Old Theatre Street, Valletta.
The centre was set up as a joint investment by HP and Microsoft with the Ministry for Investment, Industry and Information Technology, and is designed to minimise the digital divide in communities. IT Minister Austin Gatt thanked Microsoft and HP and said the new centre will allow job seekers to improve their ICT knowledge with specialised courses and find new opportunities in the workforce.
HP, through two of its Authorised Partners in Malta, namely Systec Limited and Fortune Technologies Limited, has provided HP computers and printers. It has also introduced its MAP (Micro-enterprise Acceleration Programme), a special training course for entrepreneurs of small businesses being executed in collaboration with the Ministry at selected CTSCs.
Software provider Microsoft is assisting the government in its ongoing mission of creating a widespread information society in Malta. The other centres, which are run by NGOs, are located at Aċċess centre in Vittoriosa, the National Council of Women's offices in Blata l-Bajda, the Eden Foundation Complex at Bulebel, Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin in Floriana, Richmond Foundation, Physically Handicapped Rehabilitation Fund (PHRF) in Kordin and at the Birkirkara local council.
Two more centres are expected to open in the coming months.
