Pharmacy undergraduate and postgraduate students will be presenting abstracts of their work in progress on various research projects during the Pharmacy Symposium, which starts tomorrow and continues until Friday at the Institute of Health Care auditorium in Mater Dei Hospital.

The second, third and fourth year pharmacy students' research projects deal with several aspects of pharmacy practice including pharmacotherapy, pharmacy administration and information, pharmaceutical care, industrial pharmacy and clinical trials.

This year, M.Sc. postgraduate pharmacy students who are completing their studies will also be presenting their research, which concern subjects such as the pharmacy services in emergency treatment, quality management in the pharmaceutical industry, setting up of a medical oxygen gas plant and cost effectiveness studies especially related to the setting up of pharmaceutical systems.

These projects are student work and the information available and any conclusions reached should be used keeping this possible limiting factor in mind.

The presentation of these research abstracts should serve as a means of communicating with all those interested to join the many scientists and clinicians who already collaborate with the Pharmacy Department by participating in research projects.

All those having an interest in pharmaceutical sciences and practice and wish to help bring to fruition a particular project and disseminate the knowledge available are invited to communicate with the department.

The Department of Pharmacy maintains excellent relations and outstanding co-operation with pharmacists in the community, industry, hospital, marketing, who are contributing to society through their knowledge in pharmaceutical care, clinical pharmacy, pharmaco-economics, administration, quality control, manufacturing, marketing or administration. The department appreciates all those who contribute in some form or other in making the education of pharmacy students a fruitful and rewarding experience.

The University's Pharmacy course is in line with European directives that stipulate that a course in Pharmacy must be of a five years in duration, including six months of pharmacy practice. Six months in the course's final fifth year are dedicated to full-time practice in a community pharmacy. This practice is supervised by the managing pharmacist and monitored through regular tutorials where the students meet a tutor in groups of three to four students who are given attention on a one to one basis through the discussion of a daily log book and case studies.

Pharmacy students also undergo two other placements according to their selected option which consists of one short and one long placement in different areas such as clinical or industrial pharmacy. In this way students gain professional competence in dealing with the needs of the patient as well as with the exigencies of the pharmaceutical industry and the regulatory authorities.
