The environment is a political issue - Żminijietna

Żminijietna - the Voice of the Left - has expressed satisfaction that the environment is one of the main themes in the respective electoral campaigns of the political parties in the upcoming general election.

The left-wing NGO said that concrete solutions were required to safeguard the environment while ensuring social justice.

It said that a new Government should adopt sustainable environmental policies and defend the common good - not impose burdens on workers in the form of regressive taxes, unjust surcharges and other measures which increase inequality.

"Energy provision should remain under central planning and should remain state property. Clean, sustainable and affordable methods should be encouraged. While the Government should take ecological responsibility to invest in alternative energy, Malta should not be characterised by a social divide between those who can pay for energy consumption and those who are making large sacrifices for basic needs, such as the use of heaters," it said.
