Tourism in January increased by a whopping 23.4 per cent over the same month in 2007, according to estimates released by the National Statistics Office.

The number of tourists departing the island last month was estimated at 63,850.

The NSO said that the increase primarily reflects holiday-makers mainly from Germany, France and Spain. A decline was however registered in tourism from the United Kingdom, Libya and Russia.

Total nights spent on the islands increased by 14 per cent when compared to January 2007. Overall, the average length of stay was calculated at eight nights, down by 0.6 nights.

The figures follow a record year for tourism in 2007, which grew 10 per cent over the previous year.
