Sant promises to act fast on whistleblower act
One of the first Bills a new Labour government would move in Parliament was for the enactment of a whistleblower Act, which the present government had failed to introduce, Labour leader Alfred Sant promised this evening.
Labour, he said, wanted to have this law in place because it would be a government with zero tolerance to corruption. There would be no compromises with corruption or incompetence, he promised.Dr Sant was speaking Taħt it-Tinda in Żejtun following a “coach of change tour” to Birżebbuġa and Marsascala.
On the coach’s arrival in Żejtun, a Labour Party stronghold, the coach was met by a large crowd of flag-waving supporters, who filled the tent and the square making the event akin to a mass meeting.
While squibs (sufarelli) were lit at Żejtun, colourful fireworks were let off from the sea at Marsaxlokk and supporters sang Happy Birthday to Dr Sant

You know, it's been said this election has no central issue. There's no clear cut yes or no to VAT or the EU as in the past. However, it becomes clear for all the see that the central issue in this election will be corruption. That we will vote to let corruption continue, or to seriously clean up our country. And no political party should feel too comfortable doing as they like for a five year term. In the last election I voted for the EU and wasn't too happy I had to condone the rampant arrogance and corruption along with it. This time however this issue will decide the election. And I have faith the people will tell the government they've gone too far, that corruption will not stand on this little island. And to all those with their heads in the sand, look around you, how can you even deny it or say prove it? It's the job of those in power to prove it if the least suspicion exists, and stamp it out at the source, not let it run rife. This my dear party, is why I will not vote for you this time. And I sincerely hope you clean up your act and give me something I can trust to vote for next time. And believe me, by this I do not condone the other party either. Lies and corruption will not stand. Period.

How can the MLP talk about NEW LABOUR, when all their most rappresentative men are nothing more than second or third hand canditates. Do you know some of the names who were in the 1996 cabinet team (Lasted only 22 mths) ? ALFRED SANT, GEORGE VELLA, EVARIST BARTOLO, LEO BRINCAT, KARMENU VELLA, CHARLES MANGION ( the DNA expert), JOE DEBONO GRECH, CHARLES BUHAGIAR, JOE
MIZZI. And all contesting the 2008 election under the NEW LABOUR slogan!!! If the MLP think they can fool us voters like this, they should at least learn the meaning of the word RESPECT and use it when it comes to talk about the people's intelligence !!!

Dr. Sant keeps harping about corruption and yet he is not man enough to report such cases for action to be taken.
The only reason I can think of is that such an investigation may include him or his buddies and his tactics show that he is shielding himself behind the 'paraventu'.
What makes me wonder is why such a person is allowed to abuse and smear the name of the Commissioner of Police himself!
The many libel suits against Dr. Sant & Co. will start to be heard sometime down the road, at which time, the predictable Labour Party will claim that it is another Nationalist witch hunt. Mark my words!

Mr.Joseph Attard is impressed by the "overhaul" of Bugibba...........funny isn't?? When we talk about the referendum and the EU and Devaluation and mintoff and VAT and cash registers and stipends and 22 months and 33 taxes and MLP crisis and L-istrina and where's Everybody Boycott the MLP supporters tell us to shut up 'coz thats the Past ( mohhkom fil-Passat).........but then alas!! When you mention bugibba their faces glow in happiness and pride......they talk about bugibba promenade as if it is nothing less than the Giza pyramids or a "man made" Niagara falls!! But anyway Mr.Attard for the record------
Sliema promenade
St.Julians Promenade
Paceville
Mdina re paving
Ghar id Dud
merchant Street
St.George's bay
Xemxija prom.
St.Paul's Bay ( gillieru area)
Ta xbiex
Valetta and the Birgu Waterfront
Upper and Lower barakka
hastings
Blue Grotto
Xghajra.............and many others
Obviously Mr.Attard isn't impressed 'coz like many others they take any PN project with a pinch of salt while than if the MLP builds as much as a pavement or sticks a couple of lamposts its like seeing a dog walkin on its hind legs...............Goes a long way to show that people expect second best from the MLP..............was the Bugibba project good or bad??.......Let the HISTORIANS decide!!!!!

Renato, your'e good at saying the rosary.... very good, look at the PN, it's candidates are brand new, don't you agree? all shining, look at them. 3/4's of the cabinet has been there for almost 20 years and over in power with most of them being anything except results driven. But you're good in replicating the PN adverts logos. It's a pity you didn't add ".. mil labour". This is an example of the brand new vision the nationalists have for our country. Again, caught copying, lol, the nationalists excel in copying. This must very worrying.

I have been watching NetTV and in one of the clips I saw the MP Joe Debono Grech shouting that ' Alla jzomm mal-Partit Laburista'. At a split second thinking I thought I am still living in those shameful days of the 70's and the 80's. Afterwards I began to shiver. But soon realised that I am living in 2008. Well then I said 'BIDU GDID'. No. 'XEJN GDID'. Still the same faces and the same attitude.

Sant supposedly zero tolerance approach to corruption wasn't so much in evidence when he was PM. Approached by Dr Frank Portelli on alleged corruption by one of his ministers he did not even investigate!!!!!!

Nadia Camilleri. Sant had 5 years to think about it and include it in his electoral programme.
Why isn't it there?

I think Dr. Sant is still playing that game of darts again.....trying to catch votes.....anything to be in power, if only for another 22 months..... butquite frankly, at this stage I do not think we can afford to take that risk in today´s global environment.....just one other reason (if it needs to be stated) why we have to give another mandate to the PN this time!!!!
Joseph E. Attard

Well said Vincent! I fully agree mate. I think people's minds are being manipulated when the PN says that this law has been made already (and other 'facts'). There is a sea difference between 'saying' it or 'doing it' Labour acts and does things which can be seen by everyone. Look at the complete overhaul of Bugibba, which was in a landfil state before 96, look at Zabbar road and B'Bugia prominade project. And all this in just 22 moths!!!! May I remind that Zabbar road was done in 96 and more than 10 years later, despite heavy traffic, it's still perfectly intact and perfectly smooth!!! And today's raods which are being done, the absolute majority of them are facing imperfections. It's a shame!. Well done Vicent :)

interesting how Sant is declaring to have made the fight against corruption as his priority, is going on about being 'zero tolerance' for corruption, and then he doesn't even mention the whistleblowers' act in the manifesto.
sorry Sant.. the PN has already promised to do that and has included it in its manifesto..
Dear Dr Sant, once you're being inspired by the PN's electoral programme, maybe you want to consider promising to change the tax-bands too?

This is nothing but another gimmick from Dr. Sant. Dr. Sant speaks a lot but does nothing. Exactly how he did nothing when he supposedly know of corruption cases. Why didn't he go to the police? It was Dr. Sant who said in an interview with the Sunday Times that he did not have concrete evidence, but just perception and rumours. And that is why he did not act, because he had no proof.
Dr. Sant and his party are doing anything to clutch to the last straws before sinking forever. They are throwing mud all over. Dr. Sant and MLP have more than 20 libel suits in court for bad mouthing PN candidates and officials. This shows nothing but a cheap way of earning votes.
The reality is very much different. We have a Prime Mininster who really acted in face of corruption, where culprits were turned to the police, investigated and paid for their wrong doings.
The difference is evident.

Dr Sant is very good in promising things to people. BUT Dr. Sant you need to be good as well in knowing how to deliver things to people. You were trusted in 1996 by the majority of the Maltese people to remove the VAT. What did you do instead? CET a taxation system which was a failure, added cost to the consumer. Now, Dr Sant is repeating the same game. Promising acting quickly on Whistle blower act, acting on surcharge, education and loads of other promises some of which are even completed by the present government.
Dr Sant is a failure and the people who supported Dr Sant failed as well. Bidu gdid is a good slogan that will be adapted to the Labour party after the election when Dr Gonzi will be in government again. The Labour party has to start over again. This startup will require Dr Sant and all his fellow members to resign and the party starts from a fresh page. That is the only way forward in order to have a strong opposition in Malta.

It is all well and good to enact a whistleblower act. And then what else? Dr. Sant's campaign is based only on corruption and nothing else. Incidentally this was Mintoff's camaping in 1971 and Sant's campaign in 1996. Whenever the MLP is fighting an election from the opposition side, they can come with nothing new except accusation of corruption, which they were never able to prove when in government. What the electorate want to hear is plans for the future, plans for education, jobs, and stability.

Dear Ms Mallia.
I am not sure whether your comment is meant to be sarcastic or otherwise. GonziPN promised the whisteblower act prior to the last general election in 2003 and as far as I know they are promising it again this time.
I'm afraid that is yet another example of GonziPN's too little too late attitude.

Ms Mallia, Dr Gonzi had 5 years to push forward and act on the Whistleblower Act ... he had all the time in the world to put on paper what he preach.
Personally, I think it's a last minute desperate act to collect votes.

If there is so much corruption and Dr. Sant each and every day comes up with different versions of it even stating on national TV that people went to him reporting cases of corruption, then why did he not take action? If this is true that he knows of corruption cases and does not go to the Police, does he not become an accomplice?
When during The Times interview he stated that he had evidence and was asked to show it he turned chicken because he has none. Then in his inimitable fashion he chaned the 'evidence' to rumours going around! Funny, very funny, because the rumours he talked about are the same rumours he invents.
Sure he is anxious to fast track the whistleblower Act . Maybe he will get a whistle to referee some juniors playing soccer in a 'reception class' nursery.

This enactment is much required in a country where corruption and bribery are rampant and par for the course in practically every sphere. These have become part of every-day life for decades with many people afraid to speak out because of the backlash consequences. The quicker it is introduced, the better. Victims are afraid because when they do eventually speak out, machinations begin to cover things up and the victim is often made to look to be the perpetrator and culprit.

That's a good move towards trust and compentence of a goverment elected democractically by the citizens. The whistleblower act ensures that everyone is accountable for what he/she does in his/her role as a public servant. I would like to see this in place as soon as possible. Wishing the MLP to be in a position to make this 'in-vogore'.
