The Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday reduced a jail term from seven years to five years and six months after it ruled that the sentence handed down exceeded the maximum possible under law.

Clive Martin Bartolo, 24, was imprisoned for seven years and fined €5,823.43 (Lm2,500) last November after he admitted to possessing ecstasy and cannabis in circumstances that denoted it was not for his exclusive use.

Chief Justice Vincent de Gaetano reduced the sentence by a year and a half and the fine to €2,329.37 (Lm1,000).

Lawyers José Herrera and Veronique Dalli appeared for Mr Bartolo.
