The real Alfred Sant
John Caruana (February 23) has to distinguish between the real Alfred Sant with his positive record in government and in opposition and the fictional, totally negative Alfred Sant created in all contributions emanating from the Nationalist Party media. The vast majority of Maltese voters are clever enough not to be taken in by PN propaganda because the facts speak for themselves.
As to the Labour defeat in the 1998 general election which Mr Caruana mentions, this had absolutely nothing to do with Dr Sant's capabilities as national leader and manager of the 1996-98 Labour Administration. May I remind readers that at the MLP general conference convened after the 1998 general election, Dr Sant was confirmed as MLP leader by a staggering 98.4 per cent of delegates' votes.
The real Dr Sant, not the fictional one created by the PN, is a great leader and a proven manager and public administrator.
Further comment would be superfluous.

Are we writing about the same person? Good public administrator? I remember the results of Malta Foundry in the 1980's: yeah proven manager.
And leaders confirmed by a "staggering 98.4 percent" are mostly associated with other types of political ideas.

We were missing your biased contributions Desmon. Ben tornato. Re "and the fictional, totally negative Alfred Sant created in all contributions emanating from the Nationalist Party media" are you referring to letters to the editor of the times too? Are you saying that there are PN elves too? If so, at least they are not that stupid to copy the newspaper editor in their 'internal' correspondace!!!

Great manager indeed! He can't even manage his own electoral campaign, changing and patching up day after day. There's hardly anything in the progamme voted at the MLP national conference that has not been muddled up later... not to mention forgetting to insert the VAT rebates on educational materials, which was added after the vote had been taken! How organised, great managerial skills indeed.

What positive record in (Alfred Sant's) government? I wonder if you were living in Malta at the time, Desmond Zammit Marmara'.
As for the rest of your letter, well ... beauty certainly is in the eye of the beholder.

After losing the throne just after 22 months, a good chunk equaling 98.4% of his party re-elects Dr Sant as party leader, and gives him a second chance sort to speak! Only to lose yet another general election soon after botching a referendum. Mr Zammit Marmara, to me, this is nowhere close to “great”. To me, the real MLP leader was either in that 1.6% who voted against or abstained … Or perhaps, that the MLP can’t seriously offer any better!

Mr Marmara lives in another world. Needless to say, it is an imaginary one.

With due respect DZM, losing three campaigns (1998, EU 2003, Elections 2003) are anything but fictional. So my original comment still stands.

Mr Desmond Marmara is conveniently forgetting the closing down of Meltalfond, and above all the short stint as prime minister - only 22 months - during which with his managerial skills he couldn't keep his party together, lost the goverment and in the process lost the services of Mr Lino Spiteri, Dr George Abela, Mr Dom Mintoff, Ms Maria Camilleri, Dr Alex Sciberras Trigona and all those who voted him out by a big majority in an election he himself conducted whilst he was a caretaker Prime Minister.

Dr Sant great leader? You seem to forgot the many U-Turns that he and his party have done. Also, anyone being elected as a leader doesnt mean that he/she is capable of leading.

There was another person known as 'great leader'. I hope you are not making comparisons with him.
