Libyan faces drug importation charges

A Libyan national went on trial today, accused of conspiracy to import drugs.

Murad Erhuma stands accused of conspiring to import 740 grams of cannabis resin on and before September 2004 and trafficking heroin in December 2003. He denies the charges.

Police inspector Dennis Theuma told the court that another Libyan was stopped by customs officers at the airport in September 2004 and a police search had revealed the 740 grams of cannabis, which then had a street value of Lm2,000. He had insisted that he was only carrying the drug and had pointed to Erhuma as the person who had asked him to bring it to Malta. Erhuma was arrested at the airport arrivals lounge.
