Anthony J. Fenech, MD, M.Sc. (Lond.) (Audiol. Med.), Ph.D. (ENT), graduated last November as Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Malta in Otolaryngology.

His thesis, entitled 'Pathology of temporal bones following head injuries: The macro and microscopic effects on the inner ear', studied in-depth effects of both severe and fatal head injuries on the human temporal bone.

Dr Fenech is currently presenting the results of his research to various international journals of otolaryngology.

The thesis was conducted under the supervision of local supervisor, Prof. M.T. Camilleri Podestà, from the Department of Anatomy at the University of Malta, and foreign supervisor, Prof. L. Michaels, an otopathologist from University College, London.

Dr Fenech graduated Doctor of Medicine from the University of Malta in 1986 and was the first Maltese doctor to obtain a Master of Science degree in audiological medicine from University College, London and the Institute of Laryngology and Otology, London in 1992 after being awarded a scholarship by the Department of Health.

He started working in the Department of Otolaryngology at St Luke's Hospital as Senior House Officer in 1989 and for the last five years has been a senior registrar in audiological medical otolaryngology.

In 1995, he started teaching basic sciences to various groups of paramedical students at the Institute of Health Care.

For the past 11 years Dr Fenech has been assistant lecturer at the Department of Anatomy and honorary lecturer for clinical medical students in audiological medicine at Medical School.
