WasteServ Malta Ltd yesterday said that studies it had conducted showed that gasification technology is still at its initial stages.

The waste management agency was commenting on the proposal by Azzjoni Nazzjonali leader Josie Muscat for gasification technology as a waste treatment solution for Malta and as an alternative to the Sant'Antnin waste treatment facility currently undergoing upgrading.

Gasification is scarcely used in any form across mainland Europe, including the UK, it said.

The reason behind this is a mixture of commercial and technological unsuitability.

On the other hand, the plant at Sant'Antnin provided a solution for meeting all the obligations of recycling and recovery from municipal solid waste.

At Sant'Antnin the decision to go for the material treatment plant was deemed the most appropriate for Malta's current waste management needs, WasteServ said.
