EU demands Serbia protect foreign embassies

The European Union called on Serbia today to do all it could to protect foreign embassies and suggested that continued violence would harm efforts to improve ties between Belgrade and the bloc.

"The embassies have to be protected, and that is the obligation of the country," EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana told reporters after the storming of a U.S. embassy in Belgrade on Thursday. "Things will have to calm down before we can recuperate the climate that would allow for any contact to move on the Stabilisation and Association Agreement," he said of a preliminary deal on ties with the EU, when arriving for an EU meeting in Slovenia.
