Two main roads in Gozo which have been rebuilt thanks to EU funds were inaugurated this afternoon by the Prime Minister.

Dr Gonzi said the two projects were just a link in the chain leading to the government’s target to make Gozo a centre of excellence in the Mediterranean. Together, the newly-built five kilometres of road cost €11.9 million.

Mgarr Road, from Mgarr to Victoria, was financed by the EU’s Cohesion Funds while San Lawrenz Road, from Victoria to San Lawrenz, was financed by the European Research and Development Fund.

The roads were inaugurated in the presence of Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono and Roads Minister Jesmond Mugliett. Also present was Dr Gonzi’s wife, Kate.

Mgarr Road which is around 2.5 kilometres long, was reconstructed from scratch. The project cost €5.5 million. Dr Gonzi said a tunnel underneath will take all services and will ensure that the road will not have to be dug up again as soon as a fault occurs.

The San Lawrenz project included the re-construction of another 2.5 kilometres of road and cost €6.4 million. Similarly, services including water, electricity, cable television and sewage pipes have been passed separately.

Prime Minister Gonzi said that in the two projects, a lot of emphasis was placed on landscaping, with the Environmental Landscapes Consortium entrusted with the job.
