The General Workers' Union said yesterday it was willing to work with that government that would be prepared to implement the proposals it had submitted in a memorandum to the political parties and which would treat the union as a national stakeholder.

In a resolution approved unanimously by the national council, workers were urged to support those who showed respect towards them and the GWU.

No political party should make promises it knew could not be implemented. It was unacceptable that promises were made and then dishonoured, or worse, the opposite done of what was promised.

The union said that whoever is elected to government should have clear and sustainable policies for public enterprises such as Malta Shipyards, Enemalta and Air Malta.

The council called on workers to be careful not to be deceived.

The new government had to follow clear and consistent policies and be efficient, accountable and transparent to reassure the people that their money was not being squandered.

As the largest employer, the government should also serve as a model in industrial relations.

It should not interfere arbitrarily in industrial relations and, consequently, breach the Industrial Relations Act as had happened when public holidays falling on a weekend were removed from leave entitlement.
