The GWU council in a resolution on the general elections has urged workers to back those who respect them and the union.
In a two-page statement the council did not specifically endorse any party but it insisted that the new government needs to be efficient, accountable and transparent.
The government should also be a model employer who would defend workers rights and not trample on them, as had happened when the present government ‘indecently’ removed public holidays which fell on weekends.
The union insisted that workers should not be made to carry heavy burdens which eroded their living standards.
The government should have clear and sustainable policies for companies such as Malta Shipyards, Enemalta and Air Malta while also building on the other industrial sectors including manufacturing, IT and financial services.
The new government also needed to increase the number of women in the labour force and deter the exploitation of workers, including foreigners.
The GWU said no political party should make promises it cannot keep.
