The young are being encouraged to take up sports to improve their health and way of life. Yet Malta remains one of the countries that taxes sport.

The sport of shooting has achieved more than any other sport has for Malta in both medals tally and world records. Unfortunately, our sport is becoming more expensive by the day, with the price of ammunition rising on the international market. The problem is that besides the cost of the ammunition our athletes have to fork out VAT on every cartridge and every target. If sport is really close to politicians' hearts, they should declare sports goods, including ammunition and targets, exempt from VAT.

This is the only way forward if they really want our juniors to continue to honour us with their successes both locally and on an international level.

I ask politicians not to kill the chicken that is laying the golden eggs.
