Malta's cultural heritage ought to be safeguarded and the government has been committed to restoring a large number of monuments and historical buildings over the past years, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said.

As he visited restoration works on the Mdina bastions on Monday, Dr Gonzi outlined other restoration projects completed by the government.

These include the restoration of chapels in various localities and of a number of historical buildings of architectural value such as the Public Registry and the President's Palace in Valletta, among others.

Works on these valuable sites were not limited to cleaning and replacing worn out stone but also included embellishment and lighting works.

Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit added that the government had drawn up a project, costing millions of euros, to restore Malta's fortifications over seven years with the help of EU funds.
