Medical doctors, particularly those of a young age and in the beginning of their career should be able to make progress more rapidly in their career and not remain stuck in the same position until a vacancy arises when a senior member of staff resigns or retires, Alternattiva Demokratika has insisted.
Addressing a press conference in front of the Gzira Health Centre, Alternattiva Demokratika’s Harry Vassallo said that the current situation in the health service was creating a series problems resulting in staff shortages.
‘This is not a question of money or pay packages. Doctors need to look forward to advancing in their careers. If the current situation continues, we will end up with more doctors going to work overseas.’Dr Vassallo claimed that 75 per cent of the medical students graduating this year have already applied to work abroad, mainly in the UK. He said that if this trend continued, Malta’s health service was going to end up with acute problems.
