The Malta Communication Authority (MCA) has carried out regular tests on mobile base stations and other wireless communication sources last year and found that all tested sites were "compliant with the legal requirements imposed on operators".
The purpose of these tests is to ensure that the emission levels of EMF sources are in conformity with the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines, the authority said. During last year around 80 sites were tested and these included mobile communications base stations, broadband wireless access (BWA) base stations, broadcasting transmitters as well as other sources of EMF such as microwave links and public land mobile transmitters. A number of tests were also carried out on EMF sources already audited in previous years. This has been done to re-assess their compliance.
A summary of the results of those audits carried out last year has been published on the website. These are expressed as a percentage of the ICNIRP guidelines for exposure of the general public.
The MCA has been conducting EMF audits on mobile base stations since 2002. As from April 2005 the audits have included other sources of EMF such as broadcasting equipment.
