Three kilos of heroin seized at airport

A 30-year-old Libyan is expected to be charged with importing drugs after he was allegedly caught carrying three kilos of heroin at Malta International Airport on Tuesday afternoon.

The drug was detected in a joint operation between the police Drug Squad and officers of the Customs Enforcement Unit. Searches were carried out on passengers who had just arrived on a flight from Tripoli at about 1 p.m.

At one point, Customs officers focused their attention on a Libyan national who was acting suspiciously. The police said the officers noted a packet in a false bottom in his bag during an X-ray scan.

The Libyan was taken away for questioning.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti was informed about the haul and appointed a team of court experts to help in an inquiry.
