A couple yesterday pleaded not guilty to defrauding a man and misappropriating €46,600 (Lm20,000).

Joanne Ellul, 29, and Reno Azzopardi, 22, both from Marsascala yesterday pleaded not guilty to defrauding the victim on and before January 2007 and misappropriating funds to his detriment.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi heard the victim testify that he had given the couple about €46,600. He said he had fallen in love with Ms Ellul and he would have a "good time with her". The couple took advantage of him, he added.

The couple also pleaded not guilty to breaching the conditions of a conditional discharge.

Police Inspector Maurice Curmi prosecuted.
