Ireland's FA name Trapattoni as new coach

Ireland have appointed former Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni as their new manager, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) said.

Trapattoni's Austrian club Salzburg had said earlier on Wednesday he would leave at the end of the season after agreeing a two-year contract with the FAI.

Trapattoni will replace former Ireland coach Steve Staunton, who left in October after his team failed to qualify for Euro 2008.
