Updated: Mintoff leaves Electoral Office without submitting nomination
Former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff stayed in retirement today after failing to submit his nomination for the general election by the 7 p.m. closing time.
Mr Mintoff was at the Electoral Office between 1.15 and 2.30p.m. but was told he could not submit his nomination between 1-3 p.m., when the offices were closed.
He had been driven to the Electoral Office by a PBS reporter who explained he was invited by Mr Mintoff to go to his house and had expected an interview, only to be asked by the former Labour leader for a lift to Valletta.
Upon his arrival Mr Mintoff protested at the presence of journalists, waving them away with his walking stick.
Asked by a reporter whether he had submitted his nomination, Mr Mintoff said xejn, xejn and told the reporter to turn up when he held a press conference.
Mintoff successfully contested 14 general elections between 1945 and 1996 and retired almost 10 years ago after helping bring down the Sant Labour government.

I tend to agree with Wayne and apparently not only me.
I quote Mr Lino Spiteri in Tuesday's 12th February 2008 article MASS WASTE, YOUNG TARGETS where he says:
"The Labour hardcore will vote on Election Day practically to the last person. The Nationalist hardcore will also reassemble, bar a few hundred still intent to stay away from the ballot or to go there to give a protest vote to Alternattiva Demokratika or Alleanza Nazzjonali."

(3rd paragraph)
Lino Spiteri knows Labour supporters (and the electorate) well enough.

Mr Tabone; if you are living a utopia maybe but everyone knows what the silent truth is. AN & AD will chip away votes from the moderate PN supporters and the perennial floaters. Why do you think AD is typically stronger in Sliema for example? It is common knowledge that the MLP has a larger grassroots (unshakable) base then the PN

But there are some people in this county that regardless of what their party say and do they’ll always vote for that party – even when it has been totally proven that their party was in the wrong. There is a particular party in Malta that has a lot of these supporters!

In reply to Wayne Hewitt, who are you to say that votes for AD and AN are PN votes? The PN doesn't have a divine right to run this country and votes are the people's not PN's Everyone votes according to what and who he believes in! C

Since the useless minnows AN and AD will be chipping valuable votes off PN, Mintoff would have been a valuable counter balance in chipping some votes off MLP. Shame he didn't submit his nomination. It would have been fun to see how many votes he would grasp!

Typical of his brinkmanship. Thinks he can still calls the shots. Why on earth should the EC have made an exception with him?

This should be the end of a long political career of Malta's true statesman Dom Mintoff.
The commission should have made an exception.

Very typical Mintoff and certainly adds a bit of colour.
As to extending time to submit applications, I would suggest Mintoff knew what he was doing. If he really wanted to submit an application why wait until 2.30 and then leave, when he would have been able to by 3pm?

He is the one and only. We need someone like him who believes that Malta is first before anything else. God bless him.

Yes I fully agree with Mr. Pulis. May the Electoral Commission extend the time.
