Dr Gonzi’s commitment to take charge of Mepa reform if the PN was re-elected was an admission of the failure of Environment Minister George Pullicino, the MLP spokesman on the environment, Joe Brincat, said.

He said it was a disgrace that Dr Gonzi was speaking about Mepa reform only now, on the eve of a general election. Just over a year ago, the government had ignored Mepa and NGOs and carried on with its extension of the development zones, Dr Brincat said.

Dr Brincat said the people lost confidence in Mepa long ago,a fact repeatedly made by the MLP and NGOs.

The Labour spokesman said he had nothing against the distirbution of energy saving lamps and he welcomed any initiative to cut emissions. Labour would also back any large project to generate power from renewable sources.

It was also in favour of any initiative to improve the environment in Gozo, and this was stated in the MLP electoral programme.

But in the case of the PN government, this was too little, too late.
