Two Syrian brothers who were jailed for a total of three years and two months for trying to escape from the Ta' Kandja detention centre by using a saw blade hidden in a banana had their prison sentence reduced yesterday.

The Court of Criminal Appeal reduced Abdul Hamed Tlass's prison term from 18 to 14 months and from 20 to 16 months in the case of Abdul Majid. Chief Justice Vincent De Gaetano, presiding over the case, said that the evidence demonstrated that they were guilty of conspiring to escape from the Ta' Kandja detention centre and not attempting to escape and damaging the property as they were previously found guilty of.

For these reasons he reduced their prison sentences by four months each.

Lawyer Arthur Azzopardi appeared for the brothers.
