Call for policies based on social model

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left said the main issue in the forthcoming election is a social one, namely the standard of living.

Various matters need to be confronted through a politics of equality, it said.

"While many people are experiencing a high cost of living, inferior work conditions and decline in standard of living, some groups from the upper social classes seem omnipotent, a contradiction that is resulting in hardships and sacrifice amongst thousands of workers and families."

Malta, the group holds, needs a socio-economic direction that looks towards a social model and not a neo-liberal one. It requires policies which create work, give more strength to the working class and defend the welfare state. The welfare state should be based on the principles of equality, social justice, efficiency and sustainability.

Żminijietna said that it will shortly be submitting a memorandum on the general election to the political parties.
