The Labour Party has proposed that part of St Luke's Hospital be turned into flatlets to accommodate persons with special needs. This suggestion was criticised by the National Commission Persons With Disability (KNPD) who prefer that such persons be homed within the community. They fear that in time St Luke's would institutionalise persons with disability.

While I do see KNPD's point of view and their sincere concerns, I would like to point out that as a parent of a person with special needs I have the right to choose the accommodation which I deem to be most appropriate for my son and for the whole family. As it stands, these homes in the community are very scarce and as such, one would have to spend years on the waiting list. For this reason I would opt for Labour's proposal.

I would also suggest to the Labour Party that this project be managed jointly by the government and KNPD. The latter would do a great job regarding the needs of the clients and safeguard against institutionalisation.
