I hear that there are many, presumably Nationalist followers, who have stated their intention not to vote at the upcoming election. They will presumably not vote for the Labour Party either for obvious reasons.
In front of this abstention situation, I would like to warn these people: Beware Hamas! Do you remember what happened to the Palestinians? They wanted to teach Fatah a lesson because of its rampant corruption. They had only one alternative: To vote Hamas. The result of this decision was costly to their cause and they are still suffering its consequences today.
We find ourselves in a similar situation. We want to give the present Administration a lesson because we are fed up with corruption, arrogance and mismanagement. Fair enough. I agree 100 per cent. But what alternative do we have? There is only one real alternative (with apologies to the other two parties). Now, I am not saying that the MLP is the same as Hamas. What I am saying is that we have to make a sound judgement before deciding on the next step.
With regard to corruption and arrogance I think readers will all agree that this it not something new to both parties. Those who have some history to their age know all about it. Politics equals corruption at some stage or other. The difference is to what amount and in what ways it is done. Even the best-intentioned politician will have to face up to this problem some day. Remember Tony Blair's "whiter than white?" That was on the first day. On the last day it was a complete mess.
So, are we going to get rid of corruption by changing our allegiance? Not a hope. History repeats itself, they say.
So we come to the second part of this reasoning.
Do we have an alternative vision? I am very suspicious of new beginnings. Do we start all over again? Do we go back to square one? Has the present Administration, with all its failings and shortcomings, not done anything right? Was it all that bad? Wouldn't it be more responsible to build on the strengths of the present Administration and purge all it shortcomings? I fear a new beginning. I would rather have decent continuation.
Again I say to one and all: Beware, Hamas! We might be in a frying pan but who would prefer to find himself in the fire?
Change does not come from the outside. Real change always starts from the inside. So wake up and let your brain lead you to a positive decision because, after March 8, it will be too late.
