Fra Andrew Bertie, the 78th Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John (the Knights of Malta) has died.
Fra Andrew, the first Englishmen to be elected tot he post, succeeded the late Fra Angelo de Mojana in 1988 and was credited with the modernisation of the Order.

Born in 1929, he was educated at Oxford and the University of London. He served in the Scots Guards and joined the order in 1956. He took solemn religious vows in 1981 The Grand Master had been ill for some time and passed away in a Rome hospital late yesterday.
