The word robot comes from the Czech word for work or labour. A robot is a machine that can complete a series of actions automatically. Robots can be any shape or size. They move through electronic circuits that can be controlled by radio signals from a distance, a local remote or a computer.

Robots cannot feel emotions, but they can be built to have senses. Television cameras have light sensitive cells that can "see" for the robot. Some robots have touch-sensitive pads that enable them to pick up a delicate object without breaking it. In fact robots are even used to perform certain surgical procedures. They can also sniff out contraband and travel into dangerous places, before humans venture in, and be used in mine detecting and bomb disposal operations and to gather and clear hazardous materials. And, of course, they are vital to anyone involved in space technology, or exploring underwater.

Robot cats and dogs are not just toys. They make charming, fun pets which amuse adults as well as children. They are no substitute for the real thing but soon you will be able to change a robot dog's personality to suit your mood. Its personality and development can already be changed by using memory cards that give it either a puppy-like personality, that develops as it is played with, or one that turns the creature into a fully "mature" animal.
