The police have arrested five foreigners and seized 6kg of cocaine worth €1.1 million in an operation which stretched over several days.
Police superintendent Neil Harrison said the police and Customs officers last Friday stopped and searched two 19-year-old Estonians upon their arrival from Tripoli and found four packets containing 1.5kg of cocaine each, hidden in their luggage.
Investigations showed that the drug appeared to be intended for two Nigerians resident in Malta, who were arrested on Saturday night. Another Nigerian resident in the Netherlands was arrested upon arrival in Malta from Brussels on Sunday.
The first four suspects have been arraigned and the fifth is to be taken to court shortly.
Mr Harrison said it was very likely that some of the cocaine was to have been trafficked in Malta but the rest was probably intended for Estonia.
Joe Brincat, head of Customs' Investigating Unit said that this case saw its beginning within the Customs' Intelligence Unit.
