The government has introduced a new electronic system known as eDLS through which motorists would be able to renew their driving licence online.

The eDLS followed the introduction of another electronic system in 2006, the eVERA, which allowed car owners to renew vehicle licence online.

Urban Development and Roads Minister Jesmond Mugliett said a total of 94,254 vehicle licences were renewed in 2006 through eVERA. The number increased to 186,186 last year, he said.

The number of insurance renewals online during 2006 amounted to 160,858, increasing to 223,867 in 2007.

The system used by the Malta Transport Authority also permits that VRT tests are updated online. The 75,124 updates through internet in 2006 increased to 133,596 last year.

Investments and IT Minister Austin Gatt said the new eDLS system was yet another confirmation of the fast pace new government electronic services were moving.
