Carnival 2008 kicks off today with a programme that is fuller than in previous years and weather predictions which so far appear favourable.

Carnival dancing competitions start at Freedom Square at 6 p.m. and King Carnival will make his first entrance accompanied by a defile of floats and bands. There will be children’s carnival at Freedom Square tomorrow at 9 .30 a.m. ,with dancing competitions continuing at 5.30 p.m. – a later start than usual so that the carnival floats which come later can be displayed under coloured artificial lights. The floats will follow the usual route down Merchants’ Street, St John Street and Republic Street to Freedom Square.

The route will be followed again on Sunday from 2 p.m. Events continue on Monday with the gran finale on Tuesday at St Anne Street, Floriana after 6.30 p.m.

And the weather? Party cloudy on all five days with moderate temperatures and little to no wind – good news especially for those planning to go to the Nadur carnival tomorrow.
