Cinderella, Charles Perault's wonderful 17th century tale of goodness triumphant has been performed in many theatrical forms, pantomime, ballet and of course opera. Giacomo Rossini's La Cenerentola was first performed in 1817, when the composer was just 25 years old. Now 191 years later it is the opening production of this year's BOV Opera Festival at The Manoel Theatre.

La Cenerentola is being performed by Teatro Borgatti di Cento, who scored a tremendous hit at last year's festival with their production of Giuseppe Verdi's Falstaff. Once again this year they will perform along with the Malta National Orchestra - under the direction of Mro Michael Laus. And, although the BOV Opera Festival is not strictly a February event - it begins with La Cenrentola on March 5 - it does begin before the March issue of Showtime reaches the news-stands. o indubitably this just has to be this month's must-see.
