It has to be said that the Balkans state of Macedonia is not the first place one thinks about when music is mentioned. It may well not have been in the past, but it will be in future.

Balkans gypsy (Roma) bands are truly the stuff of legend and now we are going to savour the experience for ourselves here, tonight, in Malta. Andrew Alamango's company Fringe Productions, in association with the Malta Tourism Authority, is bringing Gypsy Mambo to the Liquid Club in San Gwann for a one-off performance.

Gypsy Mambo are from Macedonia and are a traditional brass band made up of nine members. Roma Oriental music is a combination of sounds: brass plus Balkan rhythms and oriental solos, which engender a tremendous audience response. Gypsy Mambo was formed about nine years ago, in the Macedonian town of Kocani, east of Skopje. All the band members come from well-known gypsy families with a long-standing musical tradition.

They play traditional Roma and Balkan music. They are considered to be among the greatest exponents of their particular style and have performed all over the Balkans; they have also released two CDs. Their appearance in the gypsy tent at Liquid Club will also feature a belly dancer, who will dance to rhythms ideally suited to her art. Gypsy Mambo will be on from 10 p.m. until late.

Tickets for this exotic evening can be purchased from the St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity.
