The 2008 Valletta Chinese Spring Festival at Freedom Square, Valletta, was inaugurated yesterday by Chai Xi, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China, and Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech.

The festival - co-organised by the China Cultural Centre and the Valletta local council under the patronage of the Ministry for Tourism and Culture and the Chinese Embassy - included an opening gala with the participation of Chinese artistes, from Chongqing, performing the famous lion dance, acrobatics and Sichuan Opera in Freedom Square and a street parade along Republic, Sta Lucija and Merchant streets in Valletta.

A troupe of fighting fit Chinese acrobatics and highly polished Sichuan Opera artistes gave an electrifying show at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta on Tuesday.

A Chinese New Year concert was held at the Manoel Theatre yesterday.

In connection with the festival, the China Cultural Centre is holding a Chinese Kite exhibition until February 15, at St James Cavalier, in Valletta.
