A man whose mobile phone was confiscated by a teacher at St Benedict College after his grandson took it with him to class was today charged with assaulting the college headmaster and swearing in public.

Mikiel Curmi, 62, from Birżebbuġa, was accused of assaulting headmaster Joseph Micallef on Tuesday afternoon.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera, heard that the man’s grandson took his mobile with him to school and this was confiscated by a teacher who handed it over to the headmaster.

In the afternoon, Mr Curmi expected the headmaster to return the phone but it was explained to him that, according to college rules, confiscated items could only be returned to their owners the day after they are taken away. This was when the alleged incident took place.

Magistrate Scerri Herrera heard Mr Curmi plead not guilty to the charges brought against him. He was granted bail against a deposit of €500 and a personal guarantee of another €500.

Police Inspector Joseph Agius prosecuted.

Lawyer Marion Camilleri was defence counsel.
